JokiuSpot – Enabling this post from the No. 4 bus
Dec 14th
Ain’t technology brilliant.
Here I am sitting by the market in lancaster and I’m able to write a full, non mobile phone constrained blog post. OK, I know that you could achieve this with a 3G dongle quite succesfully, but what if you just have your Nokia E71 smartphone and you can’t be messed with all the setup to get it connected via bluetooth and all that jazz?
Well, JokiuSpot is a nifty utility for Nokia (and other) smartphones that sits inbetween your 3G connection (in this case Orange) and then turns your phone into a WiFi point. Yes, that’s right, a propper WiFi point that you can just connect to wirelessly with your PC / Mac whatever. The only downside seems to be that the phone turns red hot and that the battery starts draining as if you’d plugged a 3 bar electric fire into it, however job done.
The free version does this, and the premium (reasonable price) adds support for full encryption and VPN!
Happy days.
Zemanta – Enhancing this post.
Dec 13th
Via @mikepeat I came across this plugin called Zemanta. It sits alongside blogging tools (both online and hosted) and analyses your blog post, including spelling mistakes and the suggests other links and images that might be appropriate. If you do like the things that it finds, then you can just drag them straight into your post, which is pretty useful.

As an example it’s currently provided the image that you can see on the RHS of this page, and it’s also added all the hyperlinks that show up in this post, which is pretty good, and the links at the bottom. At first glance it seems really easy to use, and as you type more it refines it’s suggestions and offers you new content. So, worth a try if you’re still blogging like the old days.

Minor technical changes
Dec 15th
After a number of years experimenting with gallery software and wordpress, I’ve decided that I never maintain all the other bits of my site, so I’m moving my blog to the main directory of my website. I’ll leave the blog directory there with a redirect, but from now on http://www.chrisdixon.net/ will direct you straight to this blog.
How far is to far?
May 8th
I suggested to Emma that I might post a top 10 friends list online. I would rank my crop of friends and publish regular updates, kind of like a chart position. I could also expand this to other areas such as comments on what I think of them etc. Emma seems to think that this is mad and taking openness a bit far, but I think it would take some of the guesswork out of working out what people think of you!
Make firefox faster?

Found this article which promises to speed up loading of pages in firefox.
It does seem to have made a difference on my PC, so who knows. Give it a try (no warrenty implied!)
So many places to keep ones life online..
Apr 5th
Now this is getting updated again, I thought I would share my increasing confusion of where exactly to put ones life on this crazy thing called the web.
I used to think that having your own web site with a few bits and pieces was cool, however then we started blogging and putting pictures online.
However, now it’s far too crazy. I’ve got a profile at myspace and facebook. A silly amount of email accounts including gmail, my own personal mail and my work mail. I’ve got a flikr type thing for photos as well as my gallery on this website.
My main issue with all of this is that it’s well confusing. If I dont have my facebook account then how can I socially interact and keep up with those who are on facebook. On the flip side there are some of my mates that are on myspace, but not on facebook so I must strive to keep that up to date as well.
Obviously some of these sites have cool features and can import my blog entries and even pictures but even with this it’s a bit of a maintenance nightmare!
If anyone has a solution or any suggestions to this then let me know!
Spam update..
Oct 5th
Well, it’ been a while now, and has my tom foolery resulted in a downturn in spam? Well, here is the graph up till Oct 2006.

As you can see it shows a downwards trend, which is good. However, I’m still recieving on average 86 spams a day which is silly.
I think I have some further work to do, removing my address from online shops etc. and perhaps the only real way to succeed is to get a new address and give that out to the people that matter then use disposable addresses for everything else.
Spam update
Sep 5th
In recent weeks I am down to about 70 spams per day, so things are deffinatly having an effect. This week I am trying to track down places where my address may be visible on mailing groups or things like myspace (for example).
spam update
Aug 27th
It seems that perhaps things are having an effect! The last two days have registered only 80 and 44 spams each. I know that statistically it’s probabbly too early to tell but I’m happy
update…
Aug 24th
well, 134 messages the last 2 days, but I did find that the whois database for chrisdixon.net listed my address, so I have removed that. Apparently it can take about 3 months to see any improvement in levels of spam, so will have to wait!
